Sound familiar?

You have a drawer full of fabric scraps: too pretty to throw away, never turned into anything.

You love patchwork, but quilting takes months of cutting and sewing.

Your evenings go dinner, TV, phone, bed, and your hands never make anything anymore.

Another candle, another mug: gifts nobody remembers.

Why kinusaiga

Patchwork without a single stitch

Kinusaiga was born in Japan, made with the silk of old kimonos. You trace a pattern on a soft board, score the lines with a knife and tuck small pieces of fabric into the grooves. Nothing is sewn and nothing is glued: if you don't like a fabric, you pull it out and try another. The finished piece looks like a painting made of fabric.

  1. Step 1: Trace
    1

    Trace

Print the pattern at the size you want and trace it on a foam board with a ballpoint pen.

  2. Step 2: Score
    2

    Score

Cut along the lines with a craft knife, about 3 mm deep. A small piece takes ten minutes.

  3. Step 3: Tuck
    3

    Tuck

Lay a scrap on each section and push the edges into the grooves, following the colour map.

  4. Step 4: Frame
    4

    Frame

Trim the edges, put it in a frame and hang it, gift it or sell it.

Before you decide

The honest questions, answered

What exactly is kinusaiga?

A Japanese fabric art. You trace a pattern on a foam board, score the lines with a craft knife and push small pieces of fabric into the grooves with a blunt tool. The finished piece looks like a painting made of fabric.

Do I need to sew or draw?

No. There is no sewing, no needle and no glue on the front. The patterns do the drawing for you: you only trace, score and tuck.

I've never done anything like this. Can I really do it?

Yes. Start with the First Five Path: five pieces from 9 to 15 sections, each one teaching a new skill, with photos and short videos of every step.

What do I need to buy?

A polystyrene or foam board, a craft knife, a blunt tucking tool (a butter knife or nail file works) and fabric scraps. The tools guide lists exactly what to buy in your country and what to skip.

Is it a physical kit?

No, it's a digital library: PDF patterns and guides plus video lessons. Nothing is shipped. You print the patterns at home, as many times as you like.

Can I sell what I make?

Yes. Every piece you make by hand with these patterns is yours to sell, at fairs, online or to friends, and the Sell & Teach Kit lets you teach workshops with them. The pattern files themselves can't be shared or resold.

How long does one piece take?

A small 5 × 5 in piece takes about two hours. A framed 8 × 10 in picture takes a few evenings, and you get faster with every piece.
